Frequently asked questions

What is Queens’ Giving Day?

A single 36-hour digital giving initiative in which we ask the entire Queens’ global community to come together to support our students and celebrate and reflect on their time at Queens’.

With thousands of pounds to unlock in matched and challenge funding, it’s a day like no other and your gift will go even further than usual.

It will be a transformational day of giving and it’s all about what we can achieve together.

Queens’ first-ever Giving Day will take place on 27th-28th April. We’re excited for you to join us!

What difference will my donation make?

Your gift today will help bright and ambitious students from all backgrounds to make the most of their time at Queens’, irrespective of their financial circumstances.

All gifts, of every size, will make a real difference. With thousands to unlock in matched and challenge funds, gifts go even further than usual. All gifts, of whatever size, add up and make a significant difference. Having a large number of donors encourages others to support us too, so we would love as many members of our community to participate in Queens’ Giving Day as possible.

If the issue cannot be resolved, you can donate online through the college website. Please let us know if you have donated this way so we can count it towards the Queens’ Giving Day total.

Is there a minimum donation?

The minimum online gift amount is £1.

Can I claim Gift Aid on this donation?

Yes! If you are a UK taxpayer and have paid as much Income Tax and/or Capital Gains tax as the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all of your donations in that tax year, Queens’ can reclaim the basic tax rate (25%) on your gift, with no extra cost to you. So, for example, your donation of £100 will be worth £125.

If you are a higher rate taxpayer, you can also benefit by obtaining relief for the donation on your tax return. Your basic rate band is extended by the gross charitable donation and therefore increases the proportion of your income taxed at lower rates. For example, if a higher rate taxpayer (40%) donates £100 to charity, their basic rate band is extended by £125.

Can I donate tax-efficiently?

Gifts from the USA: Tax-deductible contributions can be made via Cambridge in America which is a 501c(3) tax-exempt organisation. If you make your gift via the Queens’ Giving Day platform and select ‘Donate in USD’ you will be re-directed to the Cambridge in America online donation page (Supporting Cambridge - Cambridge in America (cantab.org) where you can make your gift. Any gift made via the Cambridge in America website will still count towards the Giving Day total and any Challenges.

Gifts from Canadian taxpayers: The University of Cambridge is recognised by the Canadian Revenue Agency as a prescribed institution under Section 3503 of the Canadian Income Tax Regulations. Please email development@queens.cam.ac.uk if you would like to request a receipt for Canadian tax purposes.

Gifts from European taxpayers: If you are a European resident you may be able to maximise your gift through Transnational Giving Europe (TGE). If you’d like to make a tax-effective gift in support of our Giving Day, the best option is to give early and let us know.
